Fractional CMO hourly rate

Hourly rates for a fractional CMO run roughly EUR 150 to EUR 400. The more useful question is what the month costs and what it is meant to deliver.

In short

A fractional CMO typically charges EUR 150 to EUR 400 per hour, or EUR 1,200 to EUR 2,500 per day, which in practice becomes a monthly retainer of roughly EUR 4,000 to EUR 15,000 for one to three days a week. Rates sit at the top of the range for turnarounds, regulated sectors and operators who have run large budgets, and at the bottom for advisory-only scopes.

The numbers, plainly

  • Hourly: EUR 150 to EUR 400, most commonly EUR 200 to EUR 300 in Italy and continental Europe.
  • Daily: EUR 1,200 to EUR 2,500 for a genuine chief-level operator.
  • Monthly retainer, one day a week: roughly EUR 4,000 to EUR 7,000.
  • Monthly retainer, two to three days a week: roughly EUR 8,000 to EUR 15,000.
  • Project or results component: often 10 to 30 percent of the fee tied to an agreed outcome.

Why hourly billing usually works against you

Paying a chief marketer by the hour prices the wrong thing. The value of the role sits in a handful of decisions: what to stop, where the budget goes, which hire to make, what the positioning claims. Those can take twenty minutes and be worth a year of revenue.

Hourly billing also creates a quiet incentive to be present rather than decisive, and it makes budgeting impossible. A fixed monthly fee against agreed outcomes aligns both sides. We use hourly only for short advisory work where scope genuinely cannot be defined.

How to compare two offers properly

Normalise everything to a monthly cost, then ask what each side is accountable for. An offer at EUR 200 an hour that produces recommendations is more expensive than one at EUR 350 that owns pipeline, manages the agencies and takes the board question. Then check the seniority behind the rate: budget personally controlled, team line managed, number they were measured on.

As CMO of LeoVegas we ran a EUR 120M marketing budget and a team of 100+, delivered around EUR 50M of incremental revenue and lifted EBITA by 18 points, work that fed an exit to MGM north of EUR 607M. As managing director of the Italian market we took revenue from EUR 3M to EUR 18M in under a year.

Frequently asked questions

What is a typical fractional CMO hourly rate in Italy?

Most sit between EUR 200 and EUR 300 per hour. Below EUR 150 you are usually buying a marketing manager with a chief's title; above EUR 400 you are paying for a specialist niche or a crisis premium.

Should I pay a fractional CMO hourly or monthly?

Monthly, in almost every case. A fixed retainer against agreed outcomes removes clock watching, makes the cost predictable and prices judgement rather than attendance.

Is a fractional CMO cheaper than a full-time CMO?

Yes, substantially. A full-time chief in Italy costs EUR 150K to EUR 250K plus bonus, social charges and equity. Two days a week of the same seniority typically lands between EUR 96K and EUR 180K a year, with no severance risk.

Do rates include the marketing budget?

No. The fee buys the leadership. Media, tools, agencies and freelancers sit in a separate budget that the fractional CMO allocates and defends.
