Fractional CMO salary

A fractional CMO does not draw a salary. They bill retainers, and the annual equivalent lands between EUR 120K and EUR 350K depending on client count and seniority.

In short

A fractional CMO earns through monthly retainers rather than a salary. With two to four clients at EUR 5,000 to EUR 12,000 a month each, annual revenue typically lands between EUR 120,000 and EUR 350,000 before costs, against a full-time CMO salary of EUR 150,000 to EUR 250,000 plus bonus and equity in Italy and Western Europe.

How the earnings actually build

The unit is the retainer, not the payslip. A fractional chief usually runs two to four concurrent clients, each at one to three days a week. Three clients at EUR 8,000 a month is EUR 288,000 a year gross, from which come pension, insurance, holidays, downtime between mandates and business development time.

That is why the headline number looks larger than a salary and is not directly comparable. Utilisation is the real variable: a strong operator with a referral pipeline runs near full, a new entrant may bill six months out of twelve in year one.

Against a full-time CMO package

  • Full-time CMO in Italy: EUR 150K to EUR 250K base, plus bonus, social charges and often equity.
  • Fully loaded employer cost: frequently 1.4 to 1.5 times base once contributions and benefits are counted.
  • Fractional equivalent for two days a week: roughly EUR 96K to EUR 180K a year, with no severance exposure.
  • Interim CMO in a full-time gap cover: usually billed at a day rate premium over fractional, because it is exclusive.

What a buyer should read into this

If a fractional CMO is priced well below the band, ask why. Either they are early in the model, or the seniority is not chief level. Both can be fine, but you should know which you are buying.

As CMO of LeoVegas we ran a EUR 120M marketing budget and a team of 100+, delivered around EUR 50M of incremental revenue and lifted EBITA by 18 points, work that fed an exit to MGM north of EUR 607M. As managing director of the Italian market we took revenue from EUR 3M to EUR 18M in under a year.

Frequently asked questions

Do fractional CMOs earn more than full-time CMOs?

Gross revenue is often higher, net is closer. Fractional income carries no employer contributions, paid holiday, sick pay or severance, and it fluctuates with utilisation.

How many clients does a fractional CMO take on?

Two to four is the sustainable range. Beyond that the depth that makes the role valuable starts to disappear, and clients notice.

Does a fractional CMO get equity?

Sometimes, usually as a small options grant alongside a reduced cash fee in early-stage companies. In established businesses the norm is cash plus a results component.

Is fractional CMO income stable?

Less stable than a salary and more stable than project consulting. Retainers run six to twelve months, so income is predictable in blocks rather than indefinitely.
