Temporary manager vs interim manager: is there a difference?

Temporary manager and interim manager are two names for the same thing: a senior executive deployed full-time for a fixed period to fill a gap, run a transition or deliver a turnaround.

By Niklas Lindahl, former CMO of LeoVegas and turnaround operator

In short

Temporary manager and interim manager describe the same role: a senior executive deployed full-time for a fixed period to fill a leadership gap, run a transition or deliver a turnaround. Temporary manager is the term used in Italy and southern Europe; interim manager is the term used in the UK, Germany and northern Europe. The job, the seniority and the pricing are effectively identical.

The direct answer

There is no meaningful difference in the role. Both a temporary manager and an interim manager are experienced executives brought in for a defined period to do a defined job, then leave. The two words are regional preferences, not different professions. In Italy you will hear temporary manager; in the UK and Germany, interim manager.

In Italy, temporary management is the established label, supported by a dedicated professional association.

Does the choice of word change anything?

No. Whether you brief a temporary manager or an interim manager, you are buying the same thing: a proven operator who steps in fast, holds real authority, delivers a specific outcome and exits cleanly. Focus on the mandate and the track record, not the label.

What about fractional managers?

A fractional manager is different. Fractional means part-time and ongoing, a senior executive who works a few days a week on a continuing basis. Temporary and interim managers are full-time and finite. If you need someone in the seat every day for a fixed period, that is temporary or interim, not fractional.

Frequently asked questions

Is a temporary manager the same as an interim manager?

Yes. They describe the same role, a senior executive deployed full-time for a fixed period. The difference is regional language, not substance.

Which term is used in Italy?

Temporary manager. It is the established label, with a dedicated professional association supporting the discipline.

Is a temporary manager full-time?

Usually yes. Both temporary and interim managers are typically full-time for the duration of the mandate, unlike a fractional manager who is part-time.

How is a temporary manager different from a consultant?

A temporary manager runs the role and owns the outcome from inside the company. A consultant advises from outside and the client executes.
