How to become a temporary manager
The honest version: what you need before you start, how the first mandates arrive, and what nobody tells you about the first year.
In short
To become a temporary manager you need genuine executive line experience, a narrow and provable positioning, a day rate you can defend, a company or professional structure to contract through, and a referral network. Most first mandates come from former colleagues and investors, not from job boards.
What you need before you start
- Line responsibility, not staff or advisory roles: a budget you controlled and a number you were measured on.
- At least one situation you turned around, integrated or built, that you can describe with figures.
- A narrow positioning: sector, situation and role, not general management for anyone.
- A contracting structure, professional indemnity cover and a clear fee model.
- Six to twelve months of financial runway, because the first mandate rarely arrives on schedule.
Where mandates actually come from
Former colleagues who now sit on boards, private equity and search firms who need speed, and other temporary managers who are already committed. Referral dominates because the buyer is taking a risk on judgement and prefers evidence from someone they trust.
Visible authority helps: a clear profile, written work that shows how you think, and a record described with numbers. Volume applications do not work in this market.
What the first year actually looks like
Expect to bill six to nine months out of twelve. Expect to price too low once and learn from it. Expect the mandate to differ from the brief, because the problem the board describes is often the symptom rather than the cause.
As CMO of LeoVegas we ran a EUR 120M marketing budget and a team of 100+, delivered around EUR 50M of incremental revenue and lifted EBITA by 18 points, work that fed an exit to MGM north of EUR 607M. As managing director of the Italian market we took revenue from EUR 3M to EUR 18M in under a year.

Frequently asked questions
Do you need a specific qualification to be a temporary manager?
No formal qualification is required. Buyers assess evidence of line responsibility, results with numbers and references. Professional association membership can add credibility but does not replace a track record.
How much can a temporary manager earn?
Day rates typically run EUR 800 to EUR 2,500. At realistic utilisation of six to nine billed months, annual revenue often lands between EUR 120K and EUR 300K before costs.
Can you be a temporary manager without C-level experience?
At functional level yes, for example a plant, sales or finance management mandate. For CEO or turnaround mandates, boards want someone who has held the seat before.
How do you find your first mandate?
Through the network you already have. Tell former colleagues, investors and search firms precisely what situation you solve, then be available at short notice when one appears.
